Civil Discourse The Main Course

What about civility in public?  Have we lost the ability in hospitality to keep civil discourse, well, civil?  Once upon a time, it was considered impolite to discuss politics or religion in public.  While keeping an open dialogue promotes understanding, should we once again mark some locations off limits to topics of universal conflict?  What do you think?
